Kalathas beach
Kalathas is a seaside town in the north-western part of Crete on the peninsula of Akrotiri. The town is located 12 km north-east of the much larger holiday resort Chania and the distance to the airport is just a little under 10 km.
Kalathas beach
Kalathas beach enjoys a beautiful setting in a bay surrounded by mountains and trees. The beach is around 200 metres long, relatively wide and covered in fine golden sand. The water is exceptionally clear and often calm, with a small island lying just offshore.
Sun loungers and parasols can be hired in several sections of the beach. Facilities also include changing rooms, showers, toilets and a lifeguard. Visitors arriving by car can park along the road immediately behind the beach.
Just south of the main beach is another small and more secluded stretch of sand. There are no sun loungers or other facilities here, creating an even more peaceful atmosphere. It is a good alternative for visitors looking for a little extra tranquillity.
Child friendliness
With its fine sand and shallow water, Kalathas beach is very suitable for children. The bay is relatively sheltered and there are rarely any waves. There is also plenty of space to play on the sand and along the water’s edge.
Water sports
There are no water sports at Kalathas beach, but confident swimmers can swim out to the small island just offshore.
Beach restaurants
There are two beach cafés where visitors can buy ice creams and drinks to take down to the beach. One of them is the popular Reefaki Canteen.
Kalathas holiday resort
Kalathas is a small and nice holiday resort, which is about to expand. There are some small hotels and it is possible to rent holiday homes. The three-star Lena Beach Hotel is closest to the beach and receives great reviews from guests.
There are also two small super markets in the area, but otherwise the town’s greatest asset is the lovely and child-friendly beach.
If you rent a car, there are many opportunities for going on trips. The Agia Triada is a beautiful monastery from the 17th century, surrounding by beautiful nature. We also recommend a trip to Chania, which offers a lot of options for shopping, markets and cultural experiences.
Kalathas map
With its location in a west-facing bay, there are rarely big waves near the beach in Kalathas. That is a benefit compared to the many north-facing beaches on the Chania coast. Stavros, the largest holiday resort on the Akrotiri Peninsula, lies just a few kilometres to the north.
