Beaches in the Chania region

Crete is divided into four administrative regions, and the westernmost region is called Chania, just like the popular holiday resort of the same name. It is an interesting region that boasts lively holiday resorts, charming villages, magnificent scenery and an incredible number of excellent beaches of very different character.

The region offers great variety. The most visited area is the north coast, particularly the Bay of Chania, where some of Greece’s most popular holiday resorts are located. The south coast is far less affected by tourism, and the pace of life here is more relaxed. The best natural beaches are well spread out across the region, and with a rented car, you can visit fascinating beaches such as Balos, Elafonissi and Falasarna – you really should.

Popular beaches in the Chania region
The Chania region has many well-known beaches, both in the resort towns and truly natural beaches. There are no official visitor figures, but here is our overview of some of the most popular beaches in western Crete:

    • Elafonissi – a shallow lagoon with crystal-clear water and areas of pink sand. A perfect natural beach for families and photographers.
    • Balos – a spectacular lagoon with turquoise water and white sandbanks surrounded by cliffs. Accessible by boat or via a short hike.
    • Falasarna – a wide, open natural beach with clear water and beautiful sunsets.
    • Agia Marina – a family-friendly sandy beach west of Chania town with plenty of facilities.
    • Platanias – a popular beach close to restaurants, hotels and beach bars.
    • Chrissi Akti – a lovely beach with golden sand in the resort of Agii Apostoli, ideal for families.

Beaches along the Chania coast
Along the north coast, popular resort towns line up one after another: Chania, Agia Marina, Platanias and Gerani. Here, you’ll find long, wide sandy beaches with shallow water and excellent facilities – ideal for families and travellers who want to combine beach days with restaurants, beach bars and hotels.

Closer to Chania town lies Agii Apostoli, known for its small coves with calm, sheltered waters. The most popular beach here is Chrissi Akti, also known as the ‘Golden Beach’.

Famous natural beaches in the Chania region
To the west of Chania town are some of Crete’s most iconic natural beaches. Elafonissi is famous for its shallow lagoon and areas of pink sand, making it especially popular with families and photographers, but please note that it is forbidden to take the unique sand home with you!

To the north-west lies Balos, with its striking turquoise water and white sandbanks framed by rugged cliffs. Not far from here is Falasarna, a wide sandy beach with clear water and some of the island’s most impressive sunsets. These three beaches, together with the palm-lined beach of Vai in the Lassithi region, are the most famous natural beaches in Crete.

Beaches on the south coast of Chania
On the south coast, the landscape changes noticeably. Here, beaches are often tucked into small bays between the mountains. The best-known town is Paleochora, a great base for exploring the south coast. You’ll find both long sandy beaches and smaller pebble beaches, all with a relaxed and authentic feel. The beaches here are rarely crowded – quite the opposite.

Overview of the Chania region
Whether you’re looking for famous natural beaches, family-friendly sandy shores or small coastal resort towns with a peaceful atmosphere, the Chania region offers a wide range of options. The variety is remarkable, and it’s exactly this diversity that makes Chania one of the most attractive areas on Crete – both for first-time visitors and for those who return again and again.
