Since 2014, this website about beaches in Crete has been run with great enthusiasm by Allan Christensen from Denmark, who has built up a thorough knowledge of Crete over many years.
The idea for the website came about after several trips to Crete, where the focus was on experiencing towns, villages, historical sights and unique natural beaches. Since then, there have been many exploration and photo trips, especially in recent years. Sometimes focusing on beaches in the western half of Crete, other times focusing on beaches in the eastern part of Crete.
On the west side you’ll find my two favourite beaches on Crete. One is Elafonissi, which is truly unique with its pink sand, shallow turquoise water and stunning natural surroundings. My other favourite is Balos, located between the Gramvousa peninsula and the small island of Tigani. Here you’ll find large areas of sand and a lagoon with shallow, calm water.
Two other beaches on Crete that I also find special are the palm beaches of Vai and Preveli. Vai on the east coast has the most palm trees and gets the most attention, but I find Preveli at least as interesting. Here, many of the palm trees stand between the mountains, along a stream that flows into the beach. A spectacular experience.
All texts on the website are written by Allan Christensen, who is also the photographer behind almost all the photos and videos on the website. In recent years, photos and videos have been supplemented with drone footage where possible and permitted.
The website combines my interests in travelling, writing, photography, filming and building websites. I took most of the photos myself, and all the videos were recorded and edited by me. My photography equipment is not particularly advanced, but it is possible to carry it in my hand luggage. On my last trip to Crete, I took the following with me:
- Camera: Canon 6D digital SLR camera
- Video camera: DJI Pocket 2
- Drone: DJI Mini 3
